Borough of Lewisham

Brockley is in the Borough of Lewisham and is bordered by Forest Hill, Honor Oak, St Johns, Catford, New Cross, and Ladywell. The east London extension opened in February 2011 which has brought gentrification to the area.

 

Did you know?

  • The name Brockley means a wood where badgers are often seen, ‘Broc’ being Old English for Badger and ‘Ley’ meaning a wood.

  • In the past Brockley, Market gardens were famous for their huge Victoria Rhubarb. The secret to getting them so big was that they had been fertilised by ‘night soil’ (human faeces) from London.

 

Look out for

Rivoli Ballroom – This ballroom is grade II listed and was built in 1913 but was remodelled in 1951 as a dance hall. It is very visually striking and has been used in many films, fashion shoots, and live performances

The Brockley Jack Studio Theatre – A vibrant theatre showing exciting plays and performances, and is also the home of the Brockley Jack Film Club

Hilly Fields – A local park with a stone circle erected in 2000 to mark the millennium, tennis courts, a scenic café, and amazing skyline views of Central London and Canary Wharf 

Brockley Food Market – A foodies paradise where you can buy fresh and locally sourced wild produce, and with a wide variety of street food too. 

Brockley Open Studios – An annual event where local artists open up their studios to the public
