Streatham is located in both of the Borough of Wandsworth and Lambeth, and it is bordered by Balham, Brixton, Tooting, West Norwood, Thornton Heath, Mitcham, and Crystal Palace.

  • The name Streatham means ‘the Hamlet on the street’ as it was situated on the old Roman road from London to Brighton.
  • Streatham Wells were renowned for their health-giving properties.
  • Streatham was the site of the country’s first supermarket when Express Dairies Premier Supermarkets opened in 1951.
  • On Park Hill, there is a large house which was rebuilt in the early 19th century for the Leaf family. Before that, it was the home of Sir Henry Tate, a wealthy sugar refiner, who helped the community in many ways including benefacting local libraries and founding the Tate Gallery at Millbank.

Shopping

Streatham High Road is the longest continuous high street in the UK and boats a variety of shops. There are many local and independent shops in Streatham, and the council is keen for people to support them. There is a yearly ‘Small Business Saturday’ in Streatham where the small businesses in the area do special offers throughout the day.

Housing in the area is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses, 1930s suburban terraces, apartment blocks, and semi-detached family houses. The detached homes and larger semis can be found in the tree-lined streets off the High Road. There are some council housing estates in the area. The most sought-after areas include the ABCD Roads in Streatham Hill and the areas surrounding the common.
