London Borough of Greenwich
Woolwich is a district of south-east London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It lies on the south bank of the River Thames and has been part of the London metropolitan area since the mid-19th century. The town is a river crossing point, with the Woolwich Ferry and the Woolwich foot tunnel crossing to North Woolwich in the London Docklands. The recent opening of the Elizabeth Line brings even more transport options to the area.
Did you know?
- Woolwich Ferry on John Wilson Street dates back to the 14th century and ferries cars across the Thames for free. It exists because the river is too wide at this point for a bridge and is necessary to link the North Circular Road to the South Circular Road.
- It is generally believed that the name Woolwich derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "trading place for wool".
