Borough of Bexley

Sidcup is in the London Borough of Bexley in South East London and is bordered by Chislehurst, Blackfen and New Eltham. Sidcup has many parks and green open spaces, which are a remnant of the many large estates which once dominated the area. It is popular with families due to the many outstanding schools nearby. The high street has undergone a regeneration scheme in 2014.

 

Did you know?
  • The name Sidcup derives from the word ‘Cetecopp’ which means flat-topped hill and was first used in reference to Sidcup in 1254.
  • Rob Knox was murdered in Sidcup in 2008. He had recently acted in a small role in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and there is now an annual Rob Knox Film Festival hosted in his memory.
  • Quentin Blake, the iconic Roald Dahl illustrator, was born in Sidcup.
  • Early Plastic Surgery was pioneered at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup during the First World War. Surgeon Sir Harold Gillies developed skin grafting techniques to treat soldiers with facial injuries.

Foots Cray Meadows – The largest public park in the borough of Bexley, the conservation area is divided by the River Cray and is surrounded by woodland

Sidcup Place – A large green area which includes the Sidcup War Memorial, a walled garden, tennis courts, and children's playground

Sidcup Leisure Centre – A local leisure centre offering a 25m swimming pool, gym, along with facilities for children's birthday parties

 

Shopping

Sidcup hosts a Waitrose and Morrisons Supermarkets. As well as this the main high street has many independent boutiques such as Indian Rose and Kimmicass. Nearby Honeydale Farm Shop and Tearooms are great for a day out. There is also a new library and cinema.

Properties in the area are a mixture of 1930s semi-detached, a large amount of Victorian period properties, and new build developments. Sought after areas include the popular county roads just off the High Street.
