London Borough of Lewisham
Sydenham is located in the London Borough of Lewisham in South East London. It is bordered by Penge, Beckenham, Catford, Crystal Palace, and Forest Hill. It is located near many green areas such as Crystal Palace Park and its Dinosaurs, Dulwich Woods, Mayow Park and Wells Park, which makes it great for families and children.
Did you know?
- In 1851 the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park was housed in an immense glass building, called the Crystal Palace. In 1854 the building was dismantled and re-erected in Sydenham Park (now Crystal Palace Park), but has since burnt down
- David Bowie spent five years living in Sydenham in his youth
- In 2005 the Beast of Sydenham terrorised the area. It was a large, panther-like black animal, and actually attacked a man. The beast was said to be 6 ft in length and 3 ft in height

Cobbs Corner – Cobbs Corner was initially a draper’s shop at 291-307 Kirkdale run by Walter Cobb. This shop grew into a large department store which catered to the elite in the area. On the building, you can see an imposing dome with the date of the building on
Mayow Park, Alexandra Recreation Ground, & Sydenham Wells Park, as well as the nearby Crystal Palace park and Beckenham Place park.

Sydenham high street has many high street and boutique shops, national banks and supermarkets. Bell Green retail park hosts a Next, Aldi, B&Q & Currys, with a Sainsbury's and Sports Direct nearby.

Housing in the area is very diverse. It is mostly formed of Victorian and Edwardian facades that continue to 1920s and 1930s. There is also a small selection of mid-century properties. Sought after areas include Lawrie Park Triangle, Thorpe conservation area, Cobbs corner conservation area, and Upper and Lower Sydenham.
