Did you know, on average, buyers of new-build homes save over £2,000 a year per household on energy bills compared with the equivalent second-hand property, that’s equivalent to £173 a month! What’s more, if you buy a house as opposed to a flat, the savings are even greater at £220 per month!
Based on the most recent energy prices which came into effect from October 2022, on average, new-build properties will cost around £1,500 to run a year, just 42% of the cost of an average existing dwelling, which would be over £3,500 per year.
This is because new-build homes are consistently rated with much higher EPCs than existing properties. For homes logged in the year to June 2022, 84% of new builds were rated A or B for energy efficiency, while under 4% of existing properties reached the same standards. This is due to factors such as high levels of modern insulation, energy-efficient built-in appliances, modern double-glazed windows and more.
As well as the financial benefits of buying a new home, there are also strong environmental benefits too. Older properties generate nearly three times as much carbon as the equivalent new build, so as the pressure on the climate increases, the positive impact that new-build homes can have on the country’s progress towards net zero is vital.
